Owner Operator Truth

About Me

David Nichols's orange and white Western Star truck with a custom sleeper

I've been driving trucks for 30 years, spending most of my adult life in the trucking industry. During that time, I've worked as a company driver, lease-purchase operator, and independent owner-operator, including operating under my own authority. My experience spans everything from traditional over-the-road trucking to specialized transportation, with much of my career spent operating specialized equipment and handling freight that requires more than the typical pickup and delivery.

Over the years, I've experienced different sides of the industry, from local and regional operations to coast-to-coast trucking. Today, my wife and I operate our own truck as a husband-and-wife team, leased to Landstar as Business Capacity Owners (BCOs). Having worked under different business models and with a variety of carriers, I've learned that choosing the right opportunity is just as important as understanding the business itself.

I created Owner Operator Truth to help drivers considering Landstar better understand what it means to become a BCO. Having made the transition myself, I understand the questions, concerns, and decisions that come with making a change.

My goal is simple: offer straightforward information, share insights gained from three decades of real-world experience, and help drivers determine whether Landstar is the right fit for their own business goals.
